What is Shadow AI?
Shadow AI refers to the unsanctioned use of artificial intelligence tools within an organization. It is the modern evolution of "Shadow IT".
Why it's happening: Employees want to be more productive. If the company doesn't provide approved AI tools, they will use their personal accounts on public tools.

Employees pasting sensitive code, customer PII, or financial data into public chatbots. This data may be used to train the model.

Engineers asking AI to optimize proprietary algorithms, effectively handing over trade secrets to the AI provider.
Mitigation Strategies
Banning AI usually fails. It drives usage underground. A better approach is "Enable and Govern".
1. Discovery & Audit
You cannot manage what you cannot see. Use CASB (Cloud Access Security Broker) logs or browser extensions to identify which AI domains employees are visiting.
2. Enterprise Gateways
Instead of blocking AI, route it through a secure gateway (like Railguard).
- Anonymization: The gateway strips PII before sending the prompt to OpenAI/Anthropic.
- Logging: The enterprise retains a full audit trail of all AI interactions.

3. Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)
Update your AUP to specifically address AI. Define:
- Which tools are approved (Green list).
- Which tools are prohibited (Red list).
- What data classifications are allowed in AI.
